Writing and Polka Dots

Got to hang with some crazy cool and creative kiddos over the weekend at a writers conference. We had a blast exploring a wide range of classes on writing from

screenplays to
amine/manga to
young adult fiction.

We learned about

how to write great villains,
about the samurai traditions and the Jedi,
and we plotted a novel in an hour
{which ended up being hilarious
and I wish someone would
really write that book!}

I was there with my super talented teen who has been writing jaw dropping fiction since the 4th or 5th grade.  I mean, this kid can write such intricate stories with plots, subplots and intrigue!  She describes things so well you feel like you are actually in the story!  This is a talent my friends.  And not one that I possess! {Heck, I couldn't even come up with a very creative title for this post this morning!}  We went with my talented brother who is a writer/illustrator and mentor to my daughter. While they were the ones soaking up the fun and encouraging  classes from published and successful authors, I was there to learn the business side of these things.

If my daughter wants to become a published author one day, then I need to know how to get her there.  I guess right now I'm kind of like her agent, or publicist or something!

But since I didn't take any pictures at the conference, and every post needs a picture, I'm going to leave you with this poorly lit photograph of what I wore to the conference.  :D

Then this morning I woke up to read this over at Couture Allure Vintage:

Polka dots - you probably either love 'em or hate 'em, but anyone can wear them. This perennial print has a tendency to look juvenile if not done right, though.

I don't know.  I happen to love polka dots.  I think they are always happy!  Hopefully I didn't look too "juvenile" in my dots though.  ;)

What about you?

Do you love polka dots?
Or hate 'em?

{Don't worry, I won't be offended if you hate dots.  My daughter doesn't like them either!}

  1. How cool that you got to go to that conference!! I would have loved to go.

    I blog more than anything else, but have written some fan fiction in the past and used to write short stories when I was a kid. Someday, I'd like to write a novel, but would like to take a writing course first.

  2. If you ever write that novel I will be the first one to buy it! You should totally go for it! Or try the NaNoWriMo thing just to say that you did it! It's like running a marathon {or something} ~ one of those things you do so you can say you did it! And who knows! Maybe it would be your best seller! :D

  3. Cute top on you!

    I only like tiny white polka dots on navy blue. Maybe tiny white dots on light blue (I had a dress like that once; great dress). It's not my personality, but I always admire someone with a sunny disposition who can pull it off!

  5. Thanks Rebekah and Mary! I agree ~ polka dots don't fit everyone's personality, but for those that do fit the polka dot personality it is a fun, fun look!

    Btw, Mary ~ you would be really cute in polka dots I think! Are you still on your no new purchases kick? Because I keep seeing polka dots around. Or maybe that's just because I'm drawn to them like a fly to honey {or something!} :D

  7. I love polka dots! I don't have any right now in my wardrobe, but I'm eager to find something perfect.

    But I'm even happier to hear your encouragement of your teen's writing--and that you're participating in that adventure. As a editor, I would attest to the importance of knowing how to handle the business side of writing, so I commend your approach. Three cheers to you!
